Basic Info
Name:Jarlaxle
Bio
Character: Jarlaxle Baenre
Series: Dark Elf books by Salvatore
Version: Just after the events involving Crenshenibon
Age: Unknown, believed to be over 500
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Very definitely hetero
Appearance:
Jarlaxle has most of the common dark elven traits, including black skin, eyes that glow crimson and are best suited for the dark, and a shortish, light build. Topping out at a little over five feet, and weighing around 130 pounds, he's in remarkably good physical condition.

Perhaps the most distinguishing things about Jarlaxle are his love of fine things - particularly clothing and magical artifacts - and the fact that he, unlike almost any other drow, is bald.

Jarlaxle is never seen without his hat, from which sprouts a huge, brightly colored feather, nor his cape, which changes colors seemingly of its own volition. His clothing is festooned with gemstones, most of them quite large, and all of them magical in some way.

Personality:
Master of the double, triple, and quadruple cross, Jarlaxle is your typical drow. He thrives on chaos, and can turn almost any situation into an advantage for himself. When he needs it to be, Jarlaxle's loyalty is unwavering, but only for so long as he wants it to be.

Although enigmatic, Jarlaxle is one of the most charismatic people you are ever likely to meet. Even his enemies never seem to know what he's going to do next, whether he's going to set them free or give their blood to Lloth.

Although a drow, Jarlaxle does not often take part in the base shedding of blood and other wantonness of their society. He has formed a niche for himself as the eyes and ears of anyone with enough money or power and the willingness to step outside the normal bounds of drow society - and as such, there is very little he does not know at any given time.

Abilities/Weaponry:
Aside from his natural longevity and the ability to levitate and summon globes of darkness, Jarlaxle is a veritable walking Swiss Army mageware shop. He has wands, enchanted gems, enchanted -clothing-, and even an enchanted feather. It's said that he is the only drow to have ever defeated Zaknafein in single combat during his prime - Zaknafein being the single most revered (and feared) weaponmaster in all Menzoberanzan.

Notable weapons and abilities include a gauntlet with a set of throwing daggers that never run out, gemstones that render him completely silent - or very loud, whichever he chooses - a displacement cape (which makes him very, very hard to hit), several enchanted rings, and the ability to accurately judge the movements of his enemies even when he is completely blinded, whether by darkness or some defect in his vision. And those are just the things he uses on a regular basis.

Oh, and better not forget the hand crossbow with poisoned bolts. Honestly, is a drow really a drow without one of those? And then there's his portable hole...

Weaknesses:
In battle, he has none. His eyes are sensitive to the light of the sun, though this is an increasingly trivial weakness, and he trusts absolutely no one. Despite that lack of trust, he's willing to make back-alley deals whenever he needs to, alongside alliances that may well find themselves backstabbed when the real battle comes along.

History:
The majority of Jarlaxle's past is a secret he tends not to share with anyone. As such, though he has over five hundred years of living behind him, only the broad strokes are really available for study.

Born a noble son of House Baenre, the first house of Menzoberanzan, it can be presumed that Jarlaxle underwent the typical upbringing common to males in that very definitely matriarchal society. Presumably, he was taught to respect women, to be subservient to them, to cater to their every whim, and in general that he was very much inferior to them.

Somewhere along the line, however, his perceptions shifted. He grew distant from his kin, and eventually severed all overt ties to them, forming his own, primarily male organization, Bregan D'aerth. At the head of this organization, he became the eyes and ears of all Menzoberanzan, a rival in power to all but his own former house.

All that changed when a young drow made his way to the outside world, giving Matron Baenre her excuse to pursue conquest of the surface. She was, of course, defeated, but Bregan D'aerth maintained its ties to the surface. It was through those ties that Jarlaxle eventually came into possession of Crensenibon, the mythical crystal shard whose purpose was to sow destruction and chaos throughout the planes.

With the aid of Artemis Entreri, a human assassin who was one of the few who could really claim Jarlaxle's friendship - and ironically, never did - and the main protagonists of the series, Jarlaxle eventually destroyed Crenshenibon by way of the flames of an ancient red dragon and a globe of darkness that even the crystal shard's light could not penetrate. As he fled the resultant explosion of arcane power, Jarlaxle was enveloped in light just as he was passing through the portable hole he had used to effect his escape... only to find himself standing outside the gates of a city whose grandeur rivaled even that of Menzoberanzan.
